A software key generator is a program that combines two different types of files and gives you a single file which you can then use to activate the software. The keygen technique was very popular for shareware and early commercial software. It is now primarily used by crackers to circumvent license protection schemes such as product activation. During the early days of commercial software, some companies like Broderbund would give awaytheir software (e.g., their "Print Shop" series) for free but would expect payment if it was to be used more than a certain number of days in a row. A user would enter their name and registration information at the time they installed the program on their machine.If they wanted to use the program again after the expiration date, they would have to phone in their registration information or send in a check to purchase additional usage time. Other companies required that you mail the company a list of every site you installed it into. This technique was both cumbersome and expensive so most users simply figured out ways around it. A key generator was a program that could generate a valid registration code for the program. The idea was that a user could install the software and then run it to generate a list of serial numbers and their corresponding activation codes. This way the user could install the software on as many machines as they wanted, as long as they had a list of valid serial numbers handy. A key generator usually consisted of two files: one executable file and one data file. In order to run it you needed to have the data file as well as the correct registration code for the software you were going to activate.The data file would contain information that would be used by the executable file to generate a list of registration codes based on its value. The executable file would use this list to generate a list of serial numbers and activation codes based on the correct data. For instance, a common format would be to have a data file with 7 entries: S1,S2,S3,S4,S5,S6 and S7. When you run the key generator executable on a computer that is not registered it will randomly choose one of the seven entries in the data file and check to see if that activation code is valid. If it is valid then it will create a list of registration codes based upon that value. The values can be any combination of letters or numbers so long as they aren't already in use by another program. An example is to use the serial number "001" which is already in use by another program. If it is randomly chosen, the key generator will generate one of the following codes: A Windows-based keygen utility must always be used with the most recent version of Windows; otherwise, it may not work. The utility can be downloaded from several websites for free or paid (the paid versions don't require any additional setup). The cost of this utility varies depending on how many codes you want to generate.There are also special edition versions available which support more than 20 serial numbers. These versions normally cost around $14.99 (US) or $19.99 (Europe).
