NBA 2K23 is loaded with gameplay improvements on both ends of the floor for new gen consoles. On-ball defense was revamped to better resemble 1v1 matchups, shot blocking now rewards timing and is more accurate than ever, and steals and strips were improved as well. Ball handlers will enjoy new gesture combos as well as physics-based rim hangs after thunderous dunks. Defensively, the AI will be stingier with sending help until it knows an open player can take advantage of the lane.
On-Court
The NBA 2K series has always taken pains to be as true-to-life as possible, and the development team clearly wants NBA 2K23 to be no different. That said, they also understand that true-to-life can mean different things to different people.
This year, NBA 2K23 is introducing new on-ball defensive movements and body ups that better reflect today's 1-on-1 player interactions. There's also a refreshed defensive shading mechanic that gives players a more accurate idea of the areas they can and cannot attack.
In addition to these changes, new dribbling animations and "attacking size-ups" will help players bait the defense into shifting and dropping, something that all great ball handlers are capable of. Five new shot metres and 15 more unlockable through seasons will give players plenty of ways to customize their shots.
Offense
The NBA 2K gameplay team is giving players a variety of new tools to attack the basket. Whether it's driving the lane, back-dribbling in the post or spot up shooting from beyond the arc, these enhancements will help players score more easily than ever.
Other dribbling changes include improved side-to-side movement, with a focus on baiting defenses to drop or shift in order to create scoring opportunities. The defending AI has been upgraded when it comes to contesting loose balls, as well. The chemistry system has been revamped, as players can now purchase different combos of dribbling and jumping moves to give their player some unique flair. Also, purchased animations are now account-bound rather than tied to specific save files, so they can be carried over to future games.
Defense

There will now be a new defensive shading mechanic that shows players how they are covering the ball handler with three bars. The old system took only two factors into consideration when calculating chance of blocking a shot, but this year the game will evaluate the contesting player’s hand throughout a window of the shooting motion.
Steals Strips
The Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro will be the face of NBA 2K23 this year when it hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC on Sept. 9. Visual Concepts is making several improvements to the game’s ball handling mechanics and shooting.
Among these are a more refined shot blocking system that will prevent small players from stealing the show by running into defenders at the basket. The game will also improve sideline awareness in scramble plays, so you can make those 50/50 ball saves that would make Dennis Rodman proud. This NBA 2K23 update also makes it a little more difficult to stall out in MyCareer and MyCity by speeding up the overall progression rate. It will also nuke overpowered abilities like stacking badges and exploiting Takeovers, so the basketball court is a fairer place.
Shooting
Authentic shooting has received a big overhaul this year with NBA 2K23, with new'shooting attributes' and fresh animations that capture each player's unique shooting style. There are also five new shot meters to choose from, with 15 more to unlock through Seasons gameplay.
Other changes include a refreshed on-ball defence system that gives players more control of guarding the ball handler and navigating around screens. Shot blocks have been nerfed to balance the game, while there's a new scoop layup and contact layup that make it easier for smaller players to get up the floor and score.
PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players can also expect improved AI dribbling, pick and roll play, defensive tendencies and coaching decisions. There are also a host of new badges and a revamped Team Takeover meter that now fills up with a cooperative team bar rather than an individual player's.
